Boduberu is a famous traditional dance that is performed on almost any occasion: wedding, holiday or a casual day out.
Boduberu is believed to have been introduced into Maldivian culture in the 11th century by African migrants.
Boduberu is performed barefoot by at least 15-20 performers.
Usually men in traditional white shirts and sarongs accompany the dance on two-sided drums. In the past, these drums were made of manta skin; these days they are made of goat skins.
The performers include a vocalist and dancers. The song and dance usually tells a story, sometimes romantic, sometimes satirical or patriotic.
The hypnotic sound and rhythm draw everyone around them into the dance.
